Burial Scheme

1. ELIGIBILITY TO JOIN

1.1 All members of Hlalawati SACCO qualify to be members of the scheme.

1.2 A maximum of three members from the same parents may claim in accordance with clause 7.1.

2. WHO IS COVERED

The member’s family is covered, specifically:

2.2 Children between the ages of 21-25 years and still studying may be, but proof thereof may need to be furnished to process a claim.

2.3 Parents and in- laws also benefit but at an additional cost.

2.4 Fetus may also be covered.

3. COST IMPLICATIONS

3.1 A premium cost of E55.00 per month per member is required in order to cover a member and his/her immediate family (one spouse and six minor children. Children who are above 21 years and still studying and disabled will be treated as the minor children.

3.2 Additional spouse and child are covered at an additional premiums of E27.5 and E5.50 per month, respectively.

3.3 For parents/ in-laws, the member is required to pay a monthly premium of E50-00 per person.

3.4 Children above the age of 21 years are covered at a premium of E50.00 per month.

4. HOW TO PAY

4.1 Premiums are payable to the SACCO through a stop order facility. Payments can also be made directly into the society’s bank account.

4.2 Payments can be made annually in advance for the entire family.

5. WHEN DOES A MEMBER BENEFIT/WAITING PERIOD?

5.1 Members’ claims are effective only after the first month of payment. This covers the principal member, spouses and children.

5.2 For parents, existing in-laws, additional children and wives, claims are effective only after the sixth month of payment (i.e. on the 1st day of the 7th month a claim can be entertained for a person who has died from the 1st day of the 7th month).

5.3 New dependents (in-laws) are covered after one month provided they have been registered within twelve months. 

5.3 Only deaths caused by accidents may be considered during the waiting period.

5.6 Qualifying late registered dependants shall need to observe a six (6) months waiting period.

8. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

8.1 To be a member, the following certificates must be produced.

Members are advised to submit these at the time of joining or as soon as these document are available in order to avoid delays and inconveniences when a claim is made.

9. DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR PROCESSING A CLAIM:

9.1 To make a claim, the member or his/her relatives must bring a certified copy of a death certificate and a burial slip (confirmation of body from mortuary).

9.2 Valid Identity document is also required from relatives when making a claim.

9.3 Where a marriage certificate is not available for some reasons an Affidavit from a District Commissioner shall be accepted or considered.

NB: PROCESSING OF CLAIMS WILL TAKE 48 HOURS EXCEPT WHERE THERE IS A NEED TO INVESTIGATE.

NO CLAIMS WILL BE CONSIDERED SIX MONTHS FROM DATE OF DEATH.

9.4 Fraudulent claims may be reported to the relevant authorities.

9.5 Further legal action may be taken.
